Posts will resume soon, I hope. I've been in learning mode, painting in oils with a very limited pallete of 3 primaries plus white, to an expanded pallete of 18 colors with resulting absolute and complete confusion and chaos. Hang with me folks. And, oh....don't ever, not nevuh, try this at home. I ended the above painting trip with a bloody, awful mess: on me, my car, my panel, my dog, my paint box, you name it: mess. Darn near threw the whole, stinkin' set up out the window, never to paint again, so frustrating was this little adventure! ( The smile's just hiding the tears of a clown, looking back)

I liked the way these trees seemed to be dancing. The view is right out the side window of the cabin. I like to sit with my coffee early in the morning, hoping to see the bear that's been spotted by neighbors in this area.

This 12 x 16 pastel painting was done from a 5 x 7 study I did (and posted) earlier on Canson paper. I found this spot while enjoying a nice ride on my trusty old motorcycle off Kuester Rd, reached after meandering a long while on the gorgeous Deer Creek Canyon Rd. I have painted along Kuester many a time; it's a lovely area that gives the feel of being far removed from civilization, when in fact, you're only a few miles from the city.

This is one of several studies I painted of the Platte River off Santa Fe near Evans. My intention is to paint a larger work from the most successful of the studies. This time, I'm using 140 lb H2O color paper which has been sanded to make the paper toothier to accept more layers of pastel.

This 18 x 24 pastel painting was done using the original photograph and two studies done earlier in both pastel and oil. This is very useful in several ways. First, one gets to know the subject inside and out, and has a chance to work out potential problems with composition, color and other elements before committing much time and material to the larger work. Also, those who want to buy an original piece of art but prefer to spend less money, can do so with the smaller studies, which still stand alone as works of art despite being labeled, "studies".

I was out exploring uncharted territory on my motorcycle when I was stopped in my tracks upon viewing this lovely scene. I liked the layering of colors from the sky to the gorgeous blue mountains with specks of glittering green autumn leaves overlaying the blue, then an undulating pattern of bright yellow and orange from the thicker aspen leaves below. This horizontal pattern of color is nicely balanced by the trunks of the aspens.

The immediacy of pastels can't be beat. Nothing comes between the concept of the artist and its quick realization on the surface. This allows a spontaneity you just don't get with any other medium.

Outside of my Christian faith and having children, I don't think there's anything in life I've found as fulfilling as painting!

I was 6 feet under the weather yesterday. Unable to paint! Thank goodness the illness was short-lived. I sprung out of bed this morning, grabbed paints and headed out, braving the elements ( wind, cold and people staring) to paint this scene at Red Rocks. This painting was a struggle; at one point I wanted to do it serious violence ( like splash it with my turpentine!!!) but I finally felt like it was coming together. It's truly hit and miss with plein air- and often very frustrating!

Today my goal was to try to repaint yesterdays pastel painting in oil. I liked the foreground texture in the pastel piece and wanted to try to get that effect in oil. I came close, I think. Studying CM Mundy's work helped me achieve this. He's a wonderful painter. Artists owe alot to other artists who've gone before them. One can often solve a problem in a painting by leafing through art magazines, or spending time at galleries and museums.

It was nice out late this morning. This was painted plein air today in Ken Caryl Valley near a spot that I occasionally hike. The patterns and subtle colors were attractive. This is one of four paintings of the same scene done with a limited palette of 3 primaries plus white. All 3 primaries were switched out each time. It's interesting to experiment with the different effects you get using colors, based on their relative warmth /coolness , opacity/translucency and other characteristics of the paint.

This quick study was done on the "right" side of Canson mi Tientes paper. I prefer the "wrong" side , as do most pastelists, so the texture doesn't show through. I like the compostition and will probably paint a larger image of the scene on 12 x 16 Wallis paper.

Similar scene as two posts ago, but with the spikes.. There is a quiter feel to the scene without the upshoots. The vertical strokes in the second painting do add some visual interest. In this case I'm glad I did two paintings instead of adding the spikes to the first.

Again, thick paint application and lots of greys, plus simple design was my goal here. There are reeds, or whatever you call those spiky brownish growths in the field, but I liked this and was afraid to put them in. Tomorrow I will repeat this scene and put the spikes in. This is from a photo I took in Carmel last summer. I used the same colors plus the large globs of saved paint for greys as in yesterdays painting. This study was done on white canvas and gives a different "feel". New to this style of painting for me, are the thick juicy strokes of paint, and the greyed down color. So far, I like this look and want to incorporate it into my work.

Several goals in this and the next few paintings

include, first, getting rid of the globs and globs of greys from the excess paint I saved from a recent workshop. These globs of grey really come in handy towards my other big goal, which is doing a few paintings in the style of a new hero I discovered while in Carmel: S.C. Yuan! This guy was a master of utilizing greys, of design, drawing, etc. A recently discovered genious!!!

So glad I stopped and walked along the Santa Fe shooting photos despite freezing cold temperatures and exhaustion. I was on my way home from a long weekend workshop-but the lighting as I drove by was just too spectacular to to pass up, as I was tempted to do. Cold Colorful Cadence

Although exhausted from painting for 6 hours Sat and Sunday in a workshop, I was so motivated to try out some new found skills that I painted this colorful little 6 x 8 last night despite very poor studio lighting. I ended up very happy with this piece and it sold hot off the easel this morning to a very nice client of mine who stops by periodically to snatch my best before they go into galleries! I hope to do more oils like this, full of color and spark.

This was painted on Wallis paper mounted to Gatorboard for a sturdy support. It's amazing how many layers of pastel this paper can hold. I had washed out a previous painting I wasn't crazy about and thought I'd have little "tooth" left but was pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise.

This kind of scene always invokes a peace and quiet and restfulness. I love the surreal quality of fresh and heavy -fallen snow blanketing the earth, smoothing out all rough edges, bringing a sense of safety and contentment. I've learned from experience these moments are best expended in front of a nice, warm fire with a good book and coffee, and soup wafting from the kitchen.....lest my sense of peace come to a grinding halt and rude awakening by sliding my car into a tree,or slipping on the ice!!!!!

I love doing these quick and lively little studies that are challenging in the simplicity of their design. I'm pretty sure this one will find a happy home; after a while you get a feel for what might appeal and what probably will need to be recycled.

This is an experiment where I've toned the canvas in multicolor acrylic, with hues complementary ( or opposite on the color wheel) to the planned finish. Usually, I just tone the canvas burnt orange in oil or acrylic, or start with just white canvas. This is a tricky painting for me; we'll see how it turns out. I'll put myself out on the line and post the finish, or near finish, good or bad. What the heck.

Ice Crystals

People think painting is relaxing. It is not remotely relaxing. It's fun, exciting, even "meditative" when you're in the so called "zone"; but it is never, ever relaxing. This little piece stressed me out just considering where to start in order to pull it off and make it read.

This is panel two of my diptych or triptych. May still need some tweaking. This is the first time I've tried a series to be hung together. Painting is a lifelong learning process! I think it's best to do a dip or trip all together at the same time so the colors and application stay very uniform. ( one would need a larger studio for this, however!)

Accidental Moose

This was a quick study done plein air at Lair of the Bear. Unfortunatey, the focal point inadvertently shaped itself into a moose. Once you see this, it's all you can see and it ruins the painting. I did do a large painting from this study but made sure not to repeat the error.

One day on a painting trip over in the Aspen and Basalt area I braved a lone excursion over Hagerman Pass in the trusty ole white Honda Pilot. I was scared, very scared at one point, but the frightening yet exciting adventure was well worth the painitings and photos I got!!!
