Light the Night

Same evening, different location. I let Nick drive me around in the jeep while I took pictures. He's 12, but a good little driver out on the country roads. I got to drive a jeep on country roads when I was 12, too.

Night Sky Near Cabin

This is one of several night sky studies. It is good to stick to a theme until there is nearly nothing more to say, or until an artist gets bored....

Here, I changed the clouds, played around with the line of trees interfacing with sky and tweaked the color showing through the bark, which was the element that attracted me most to this scene.

Backlit Eve ll

This is another study from a theme I'm still working with and learning from. I find it very helpful to stick with one subject and work it over and over, adding nuances, changing color, value , size and other elements. It's fun, and a great learning tool, too. Painting is a life long process - there is always room for improvement.

As we leave the cabin to head back to the city, this view off Antler Drive always gives me pause; it's hard to leave the peace, quiet and beauty of the countryside! Oh beautiful for spacious skies......I love this great country!

Spring in the Air

Each season provides abundant material for interesting and colorful paintings. I think late winter/early spring is one of my favorites.

I risked life and limb for this image. It presented itself while I was driving 70 mph on I-80 coming back from a visit to Paola, Kansas and Omaha, Nebraska.

Warm Against Cool

Fern reluctantly joined me on a bike ride along the Platte River on my new townie. Reluctant because he thought the basket, seat, tassels and bell ( which has a very nice tone that begs to be rung often) were a bit over the top. This scene brought us both to a quick halt! Colorado is endlessly gorgeous. We are on a perpetual vacation living here.

Sundown in Indian Mountain

Sundown in Indian Mountain near Como is not to be missed. Time to stop whatever you're doing, grab a glass of wine, a lightweight fold -up chair, a camera and the dog ( to protect in case of bears) and head up the hill and enjoy the show!

Lair from Above

I liked the abstract quality about the image- a challange to paint and a chance to take advantage of the grays.

Through the Woods

Hiking through the snow on a crisp but not too cold late winter day we happened upon this lucky pattern of color. An artist should never be caught without her paints, canvas or camera!

Lake Harriman

It's good to shake things up from time to time and paint an off-size work. Keeps an artist on her toes....... It takes me 15 minutes to jog around this lake. My son can run it in 10.

Time to Head Home

I was painting on location but just couldn't get "inspired" by what I was seeing. It was midafternoon and everything appeared "flat". This painting was done by using the elements available, then projecting onto the canvas an evening scene, which I think made for a more attractive painting.

Boy in Hat

Ted's face has such character. Particularly at this age, he had so many funny expressions! Kids are great, and quite a challange to paint.

Valley Sweep

I like the rust-red bushes that form an hour glass on its side and the yellow grass that leads you into the stream and back towatds the mountains. It's a peaceful , quiet scene that beckons the hiker to enter.

Gently into the Night

The blue clouds over the strip of light sky over the mountains....That blue against the yellow-orange autumn foliage....the strip of highlights in the foreground grass and the red-brown earth underneath the trees.....light glancing off the trees in shadow on the left....these attracted me to this scene.

Up Four Mile

Fern and I drove our jeep up Four Mile Road. What a day! A painting around every turn. It was simply too gorgeous to stop and paint at any one spot so we kept moving and took lots of photos. Nothing beats painting on location, but time doesn't often allow for that.

Floral Study in Oil

Floral studies are a great chance to use bold, bright colors that you usually can't get away with in a landscape. I especially like doing small florals and varying the color combinations while keeping the other elements of design uniform.

Human Head, first attempt

It's good to have fun! :>)

This may be "the most ridiculous item of the day" but what fun I had with this, my first(and possibly last) sculpture of a human head.

On the Rocks, Oil, 9 x 12

This study was painted along Santa Fe River near Evans st. The way the light stuck the rocks turned ordinary rocks into jewels!
