Springward

In this piece I was after the clean look I admire in Stephen Datz's work. This is an abstract representational painting.

This is the next step of the underpainting shown on yesterdays post. I may work more on this or not. I'll observe it for a day or two. If I add more, I could ruin the whole thing. It's a risk probably worth taking in order to keep learning.

Yellow Fields Forever

I love doing these quick and lively little studies that are challenging in the simplicity of their design. I'm pretty sure this one will find a happy home; after a while you get a feel for what might appeal and what probably will need to be recycled.

Painting in progress....

This is an experiment where I've toned the canvas in multicolor acrylic, with hues complementary ( or opposite on the color wheel) to the planned finish. Usually, I just tone the canvas burnt orange in oil or acrylic, or start with just white canvas. This is a tricky painting for me; we'll see how it turns out. I'll put myself out on the line and post the finish, or near finish, good or bad. What the heck.

Ice Crystals

People think painting is relaxing. It is not remotely relaxing. It's fun, exciting, even "meditative" when you're in the so called "zone"; but it is never, ever relaxing. This little piece stressed me out just considering where to start in order to pull it off and make it read.

Trek Through Snow Country

The zig-zag pattern of the distant trees and bushes was appealing. I added in the large foreground trees for needed vertical balance.

First Autumn- Panel Two

This is panel two of my diptych or triptych. May still need some tweaking. This is the first time I've tried a series to be hung together. Painting is a lifelong learning process! I think it's best to do a dip or trip all together at the same time so the colors and application stay very uniform. ( one would need a larger studio for this, however!)

Colorado Reds

This is part of a series I'm working on. Tomorrows post will show the second of a planned diptych or triptych. This, though, is a stand alone. It really was that red one fall here!

Accidental Moose

This was a quick study done plein air at Lair of the Bear. Unfortunatey, the focal point inadvertently shaped itself into a moose. Once you see this, it's all you can see and it ruins the painting. I did do a large painting from this study but made sure not to repeat the error.
