Having some fun switching things up a bit, stepping out of my comfort zone, taking on new subject matter. An artist must fight the temptation to stick with the tried and true in order to stay interested and continue growing. At least that's my opinion!

Three Happy Apples

This was great fun for me since I don't often do still life paintings. As with flowers, fruits enable full out , no holds barred color.

I tremble in fear at the thought of attempting this in oil.

Perhaps I will be fearless tomorrow....

This scene was done first in pastel, and posted back last week or so. I'm enjoying the process of painting in oil after the style of my pastels. Great tool in learning to mix color accurately!

Bougainvillea

How gorgeous the Bougainvillea seen everywhere in San Fransisco and Carmel. I wish it was as ubiquitous in Colorado!!! This was seen off Lombard Blvd, the crooked street , in San Fran.

I was 6 feet under the weather yesterday. Unable to paint! Thank goodness the illness was short-lived. I sprung out of bed this morning, grabbed paints and headed out, braving the elements ( wind, cold and people staring) to paint this scene at Red Rocks. This painting was a struggle; at one point I wanted to do it serious violence ( like splash it with my turpentine!!!) but I finally felt like it was coming together. It's truly hit and miss with plein air- and often very frustrating!

....and another oil of a view first done in pastel. Again, I used the pastel piece rather than the photo to attempt a similar effect in oil. This is teaching me a lot- although, in this case, I think the pastel has a nice "shimmering" effect I didn't quite capture in the oil.
