I've been buried in the studio again, getting ready for the Artisan Holiday Show.  Over the next several days I will be posting the 6x6 birds that will be for sale.
I'd love to have you stop by the show.  But if you cannot make it and want a bird, I am making them available from this site!
If you see one you'd like that is sold, I would be happy to do another similar bird.  No two are ever exactly alike, however.  All of these come mounted on a nice board for a beautiful presentation.  (See below)  Hanging gear is placed on back so paintings are ready to hang on your wall.

How to get started in pastel painting, youTube videos, oil paintings birds cardinals

Greetings!  Oh Happy Day!

If you are new to painting in pastels or would like to get started, I just launched my first teaching video which covers materials for painting in pastel.  These videos can be seen on YouTube under Tracy Haines Fine Art.

(In the last post I wrote out materials that were discussed in the video for your convenience. )

Fresh off the easel:

I love the attitude in this little guy! Just look at his body posture.  Cardinals, especially, seem to convey attitude in the way they hold themselves and stare you down. This one is a 6x6 oil on Ampersand Gessobord and is mounted on a black 8 1/2x 10 1/2  plaque, as shown. It's ready to hang.
$ 95.00

In my next video I will demonstrate how I do a pastel painting on sanded board. Stay Tuned!

Today's Quote:

I heard this while listening to Lesli Saeta on the podcast, Artists Helping Artists:

" You get one chance in this world to enjoy every day and if you don't enjoy it it's your own fault, when the day's done. The more I do the better."   So true!  I love that.

Today's Studio Tip:

Once you have laid in the foundation of your painting and you are at the point when you can put the left brain to bed and start using the right side,  listen to a podcast of Artists Helping Artists.  I have learned to much listening to these fantastic, free and information-FILLED podcasts and love that I'm multi-tasking.  If you don't like to listen and paint at the same time, then try downloading these to an i-pod or from your smart phone while you walk or jog.

The podcasts are about an hour long, so you can knock out a 2-3 mile walk and get exercise!  Again-multi-tasking!
:)

Below is a preview of some new styles of painting I am trying out.  I will be unveiling these at the next Summer Art Market June 13 and 14th at 2nd and Grant in Denver, booth # 6. Please stop by!

Aspen a'Glow is a 30x40x2" mixed media ( charcoal, pastel and acrylic) painting on gallery-wrapped- style Birchwood. Sides are painted black and it is ready to hang!  $ 1200.00  Free shipping

Have a wonderful, beautiful, joy-filled day and be sure to enJOY every minute of it!

Tracy Haines how to art videos on pastel painting Pastel painting for beginners, materials and techniques for painting in pastel

Hello!

I recently launched a YouTube channel where I will post short video tutorials on art.

As mentioned on my recent YouTube video,  I am happy to provide a written list of materials mentioned in the course of the teaching demonstrations.
(View videos on YouTube under Tracy Haines Fine Art)

In the Getting Started in Pastel video, pastel papers and various brands of pastels were mentioned.
Find most of these at your local art supply store or check out Blick or Jerry's Artorama online.

Pastels:
-small box of hard pastels such as Nupastels ( a box of 36-96, depending on your budget)
-box of soft pastels: Rembrandt is high quality and budget friendly- they are of medium hardness.  Other soft pastels to consider:  Terry Ludwig ( these are square and luscious- my favorites), Unison ( I love these- they are soft, round and thick and don't break and crumble easily) Sennelier and Schmincke.
I recommend visiting an art supply store and buying a few of the various brands to see what you like before investing in a large box of any one brand.

Papers:

If you are new to pastel, buy a 9x12 pad of Canson mi Tientes paper in earth colors. This is a good quality paper and reasonable in price.  Buy a small pad of Wallis sanded paper if you can find it.
Pick up a single sheet of Art Spectrum Colourfix Coated pastel paper or UArt Sanded pastel paper.  The Wallis , UArt and Art Spectrum will allow you to try my wet underpainting technique. ( Sennelier La Carte Pastel Card does not allow for a wet treatment)

Other items:  vine charcoal, workable fixative,   box of vinylgloves (or Gloves in a Bottle or ArtGaurd) to protect your skin, turpenoid or Gamsol odorless mineral spirits by Gamblin.

I suggest subscribing to Pastel Journal.  I learned so much when I began pastel painting from this monthly magazine.

Tracy Haines original art acrylic paintings art on canvas Colorado landscapes fine art

Title:  Neighbor
Artist: Tracy Haines
Medium:  acrylic on 6x6x11/4 inch wrapped canvas
 Size: 6x6"
Unframed :  This piece can hang on the wall from a nail as is, or can stand on a tabletop

I see this view from my upstairs window each morning.  The light this day was just lovely.
My work varies from impressionistic to occasionally expressionistic.
Expressionism seeks to depict the feeling of the place, pushing colors and values as needed to relate the scene as experienced by the painter at the time. On this occasion, I did not need to push color much, except in the foreground  lawn a bit to make the painting really "sing".

Tracy Haines Colorful colorado landscapes fall aspen mountains

Towards Steamboat Springs ( EB 130) is an 8x10 oil on 1/4" masonite prepared with PVA sizing followed by 3 applications of gesso.

Painting pal Holly and I drove towards Cataract Lake to plein air paint. Took us forever to arrive though, because we wanted to stop to photograph the breathtaking scenes all along the way.  Have I mentioned what a blessing upon blessing it is to live in the great state of Colorado?

Winter Lake is a 5x7 acrylic painting on canvas panel.  Colorado skies are sublime. The sky this day cast a gorgeous array of subtle colors over the partly frozen lake and permeated the surrounding snow-covered land, trees and bushes. Some scenes paint themselves!

Tracy Haines Art,fine art, paintings, landscapes, mountains, snow, trees,Colorado, tonal painting ,original, modern contemporary art,

I really like this tonal scene from the mountains.  How on an overcast, snowy day all the values of the landscape close in and bundle up together, as we do, to stay warm.  Or perhaps  just to present a lovely , quiet scene for the landscape lovers pure, unadulterated enjoyment. But I am starting to wax poorly poetic again, so will stop writing and start painting.

Fruit Medley is a colorful 24x30 oil  painting on stretched canvas.  The visual approach in this painting was equalization, or texture and pattern. This painting was built up in layers, adding visual interest.

Tracy Haines fine art original daily painting oil on canvas affordable wall art Carmel California seascape

After a fun vacation with Ted and Nick in San Fransisco,  Fern and I took the kids to Carmel.  What a quaint, lovely town.  We hit galleries, played at the beach, just had a great time.  I was inspired by an artist named SC Juan, who painted around the area using a grayed down palette and thick, juicy paint.
I painted this scene from Carmel thinking about his style.

Tracy Haines fine art original oil painting on canvas Colorado rocks trees colorful plain air daily impressionism

Fernando and I used to motorcycle at Rampart Range!  The paths are narrow, deep, steep and very tricky.  I can't believe I ever had the nerve.  Last time we went, we took our ATVs.  I got scared, frozen scared, immobilized, and Fern had to get me unstuck.  I took my jeep back last summer and painted this wonderful rock, doing a balancing act, like I had to do on the motorcycle.  I much prefer to paint at Rampart Range.

Tracy haines Original fine art for sale affordable pastel oil acrylic paintings on canvas wall art impressionism expressionism colorful colorado trees flowers floral red green blue purple mountains streams skies sunsets plein air

I screeched my little ole jeep to a slipping, sliding halt as I drove up this pass from Como, Colorado towards Breckenridge.  Just loved the colors of those distant mountains!!  This 9x12 oil on panel was painted en plein air while I was precariously perched on the side of a road.  One false step backwards off the cliff  and bye-bye Tracy.  The average artist will indeed risk life and limb for a painting!

Bid for this on eBay, if you are so inclined, on 3/4/14. Search Hoosier Pass EB46

"Wisdom" is a 5x7" acrylic and pencil sketch on 6x8" 140 lb watercolor paper. I left a margin of paper to make framing with a matt easier, should you choose.  This painting will be up for auction on eBay today at 5:00 pm.  Bidding starts at $0.99.  Hard to beat this bidding price. If interested in bidding, access auction through eBay or through Daily Paintworks ( link on your right)

I fell in love with owls after reading the book, Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien
What a remarkable, poignant story.  I very highly recommend this book.

I also wanted to step out of my comfort zone and paint an animal for a change.  Had fun doing this.

Snow-Covered Road is an acrylic and pencil sketch on 140 lb watercolor paper.  What a versatile medium, acrylic!  Love it!  There are many ways to apply this medium for varied effects: thick, like an oil, thin like watercolor, or layering, as in pastels.

I am very thankful to work as an artist.  I truly can't wait to get to the studio and work every day!!

This painting is presently on eBay.  If you would like to bid on this piece, click the link below:
