Benefits of painting daily, oil paintings, #30paintingsin30days, Ken Caryl Valley, Colorado,

I'm halfway through the #30paintingsin30days challenge.  It's not easy; it's a bit harder than I expected.  However,  I've learned a lot in doing this and thought I'd share some of what's helped.

Top 8 benefits of painting every day

1) It gets the juices flowing.
Every artist gets in the occasional, miserable rut.  Burn out strikes and the last thing you want to do is get into the studio. I've found that the mere act of laying out the paints, dragging the brush across the canvas,  laying down a base coat of color , is often all it takes to get the inspiration and excitement back.  Ideas flow and pretty soon you can't wait to get to the next painting.  You're out of the rut.

2) Drawing skills improve
It's amazing how much easier it is to lay in a quick and accurate sketch  after several consecutive days of work.  I've found that if a week or so goes by, that initial process is much more arduous, stressful and un-fun.

3) Organizational skills improve
Knowing the time needed to complete, photograph and load up ( to eBay, blog, facebook, instagram and the 30 in 30 site) a piece of art,  one needs to organize not just  the studio and office space, but also  the day and week in general.  Life does not stop when one takes on a daily painting challenge.

4) Self discipline kicks in
No more excuses. No more laziness.  You committed to the project; you just need to get it done.

5) Joy and happiness escalate
Every artist will relate to this.  The artist MUST paint.  She's miserable if she doesn't. He's grouchy if too much time away from the studio passes.    It's interesting.  I find that if I do a lousy painting I'm in a lousy mood.  When I do a piece that works out well, I'm on a near high.  However,  if I put off painting for any length of time, for any reason at all , I'm in a much worse frame of mind than when I paint and have a lousy result. In this way, joy and happiness really do escalate!

6) Business improves
You are not going to sell what you do not paint.

7) One learns new techniques
Particularly when doing daily paintings of smaller works, it's easier to try out new techniques, new subjects, a different palette or perhaps a different support.  Because the piece is small, there is less of a risk of wasting paint or other supplies. When you stretch yourself, you grow, and it's much easier to do this when painting small and often.

8) Overall artistic growth happens
Try it and see. Log your first painting and check it against the 30th.

ladies artists' retreat, plein air, plein air paint outs, oil painting, pastel painting, Colorado, mountains, art retreats,

As promised.........

Below is the detailed menu for the upcoming September Ladies Artists' Retreats mentioned in the last blog post.

But first..........

I wanted to give you a little background on the conception for the retreat.

View near cabin in Indian Mountain at night

Our dog, Renoir, walking towards cabin. Pooch will not be with us on retreat.

I've been on a number of out-of-town paint-outs with other artists. All of them have involved sharing close quarters with both strangers and painting buddies. Without exception, the experiences have been phenomenal.  The feedback/critiques on the daily paintings, the sharing of tips and information and the camaraderie have made these retreats fun and tremendously helpful to my growth as an artist.

My husband and I have had our cabin since 2007.  Our youngest child will enter college next year and with that, we will have 3 kids in college at the same time. To help with that expense, we considered selling the cabin.  After brain storming a bit, the idea for the retreat came.  Because similar retreats have been so enjoyable and helpful to me, I decided to give this idea a try.  We've also placed the cabin on VRBO, with nice success,  and feel comfortable at this point keeping our wonderful "home away from home".

Winter at MWP above was completed in the studio after I had done a plein air study on location.  I love doing winter scenes, partly because I just love to paint with blue!

Well, my studio re-organization project is coming along nicely.  On a whim,  I decided to paint two of the walls with a warm, neutral gray.  I think I like it, but will live with the color for a bit before putting things back in place.  Want to make sure it does not leave the studio too dark.

I have been a bit under the weather all week with a re-root canal proceedure that has not gone as smoothly as in the past.
I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say, I shall keep this post shorter than usual.

If you are in the Breckenridge area July 24-26, please stop by the Breckenridge Main Street Art Festival.

Until next week........

Tracy Haines pastels landscapes paintings impressionism plein air colorado crested butte

Title:  Streams Sing
Artist: Tracy Haines
Medium: Pastel on Wallis professional sanded paper mounted to foam core.
Size: 9x12
Unframed

This is one of many plein air pieces I did on a trip back to Crested Butte, Colorado earlier this July.  The scenes everywhere were simply show-stopping.  It was the week of the wildflower festival.  This year the color purple seemed to dominate over the yellow we saw in abundance last year.  I loved the way the beautiful cerulean-cobalt blue stream cut and zigzagged through the summer-green, flower- laden fields. The purple mountains in the back set the scene off nicely.

Winding up Antler Ridge in Indian Mountain, my sister Becky and I were struck by this gorgeous view.

Haines original art landscape paintings oil on canvas mount Elbert Colorado mountains fall foliage aspen trees paths

Mount Elbert is a 9x12 oil on linen canvas attached to masonite. This piece was done plein air.

Thrice I've tried to climb this 14er!  Each time we were forced to turn around and beat a hasty retreat. At one point we were a mere 30 minutes from the peak.  One day, perhaps. (although this ole body is starting to kick back against things like 14ers.....)

I was attracted to the gorgeous colors of the scene here and also liked the vertical light aspen trees against the parallel arrangement of bands of colors from the ground on up to the sky.

Title: Cool Lair Day
Artist: Tracy Haines
Medium: Acrylic on 140 lb heavy watercolor paper
Size: 2 1/2 x 3 1/2  (Standard ACEO size)
Spring is my favorite season for painting at Lair of the Bear in Colorado.  The golden yellow glowing willows seem to shout for pure joy against the melting snow. The streams run high and very blue this time of year: just a gorgeous array of colors for the painter!

Title:  Neighbor
Artist: Tracy Haines
Medium:  acrylic on 6x6x11/4 inch wrapped canvas
 Size: 6x6"
Unframed :  This piece can hang on the wall from a nail as is, or can stand on a tabletop

I see this view from my upstairs window each morning.  The light this day was just lovely.
My work varies from impressionistic to occasionally expressionistic.
Expressionism seeks to depict the feeling of the place, pushing colors and values as needed to relate the scene as experienced by the painter at the time. On this occasion, I did not need to push color much, except in the foreground  lawn a bit to make the painting really "sing".

Colorado Fall, 5x7 oil on canvas panel,  $ 35

One of my favorite things to do in the fall is ride my little motorcycle along the barren dirt roads near our cabin.  Often, campers have fires going. The crisp fall air combined with the smell of burning logs and pine tree is simply intoxicating. I break out in song as I ride. Can't help it.

Towards Steamboat Springs ( EB 130) is an 8x10 oil on 1/4" masonite prepared with PVA sizing followed by 3 applications of gesso.

Painting pal Holly and I drove towards Cataract Lake to plein air paint. Took us forever to arrive though, because we wanted to stop to photograph the breathtaking scenes all along the way.  Have I mentioned what a blessing upon blessing it is to live in the great state of Colorado?

Tangles( EB123) is an 8x10 oil painting on masonite.

I was shooting photos of my son, his date, and friends at a local park for homecoming pictures.  The light was great; I got distracted and started thinking as an artist, not a mom, to the consternation of son! ;) Got great pics and a nice painting though!

Tracy Haines fine art original oil painting on canvas Colorado rocks trees colorful plain air daily impressionism

Fernando and I used to motorcycle at Rampart Range!  The paths are narrow, deep, steep and very tricky.  I can't believe I ever had the nerve.  Last time we went, we took our ATVs.  I got scared, frozen scared, immobilized, and Fern had to get me unstuck.  I took my jeep back last summer and painted this wonderful rock, doing a balancing act, like I had to do on the motorcycle.  I much prefer to paint at Rampart Range.

This is another ACEO art card; an acrylic and watercolor paper.  I will list some on my Etsy site as well.

I can't believe the blessing of living in Colorado.  It really seems I have been on a 16 year vacation.  The small cabin in the mountains was a great idea for us.   Many of my paintings have come from areas right around the cabin.  Just endless material.
